Morecambe Weekend

One of the Lune’s main events of the racing calendar was the Morecambe weekend. Held during May with a total prize list then of £500, it attracted riders from all over the United Kingdom. Chandy a soft drinks company sponsored the main professional race with riders such as Ian Hallam, Sid Barras and Les West turning up to give it their best against the often strong breeze of Morecambe promenade.

In summing up the Morecambe weekend in 1972, Colin Willcock wrote in Cycle Sport,
“The Supremo on the Prom' is Gordon Brennan, of that there is no doubt, his word is law. I have thought once or twice while watching him fetch out the tail enders in the Devils that if they could give him horns and a tail he would even look the part as his tall figure dominates the proceedings. He commands the respect of all the riders to the extent that there is little or no wrangling about decisions taken on the line and heaven only knows I’ve seen some men talk their way into 5th or 6th places over the years but never at Morecambe”, (Cycle Sport).
